OK Well the bike is painted and back together and 99% complete. Got a few wires to reconnect and a few things to zip tie and hide and shit like that but I can't get this thing to run right to save my life. After I finished the mock up in November I had been riding the bike around unpainted for about 2 weeks to make sure everything was in a good spot and nothing was rubbing or needed to be adjusted or moved before I took it back apart for paint and chrome. I was riding to work one morening and went to get on the interstate and hit it hard on the onramp to get up to speed and it just wouldn't go above about 55 mph. I thought I'd gotten some shit in the main jet because it was only above half throttle so I turned around and limped it home. I decided I'd just take it back apart and clean the carb while I was at it and I did. I got it back together Tuesday night and fired it up and its still doing the same shit. Idles and starts fine but when you get above half throttle it just starts missing super bad and shooting flames out the exhaust. I've been at it for 2 nights trying to fix it and I'm going to try and swap my carb for a buddy's and then swap my ignition with another friend who has the same one and see what happens. Since I've had a bunch of people ask me about chroming in the last few weeks I thought I'd throw up some info on my experience. I used Hanlon Plating here in Richmond. I originally called and they told me they didn't do exhaust pipes or aluminum parts so I basically wrote them off. I called around to a bunch of other places in the area and nobody could even give me a price, much less chrome an 8 foot long exhaust pipe. I called my girlfriend's stepdad who's been around bikes a lot longer than I've even been on this planet and he told me Hanlon did his buddy's pipes. Long story not very short, I called them back and they said they'd do the pipes but wouldn't give me a warranty on the chrome which I didn't give a shit about anyway. I took them up there at about 3 in the afternoon on a Monday and had them back in my hands on Thursday afternoon. I definitely wouldn't say it was cheap at $300 for the two pipes and $20 for an aluminum top clamp for my bars, but I had to have the work done and they look awesome and it was definitely a good turnaround. For the size of the pipes I don't think the price was totally insane, but it was more than I wanted to pay.

I also took a pile of stuff back over there yesterday morning that included my sissy bar, top clamp for my triple tree, riser bottoms, headlight bracket, highway peg bracket, and a few little steel brackets and they quoted me $225 and said it'd be ready early next week. Again, more than I wanted to pay but I know they'll look good and when you weld on old chrome you know you're gonna have to pay the bucks to get it to look right in the end.

Hanlon is a shop that doesn't have a bunch of overhead and bullshit and I respect that about them. They seem to do good work and in a decent time frame. It's not the cheapest place around I'm sure, but its worth it to me to not have to ship it all somewhere or drive to Mongolia in my V8 van to drop it off.

Pipes look awesome with the chrome and I realized at the last minute I have more stuff I need to get chromed but I think I've got time before the paint is finished so Monday I'll take it back to the chromer. Hard to believe this is progress but it is. I took everything back apart and took the tins to Fred this weekend. Sanded on the frame all day yesterday and finished welding on it and did a little bondo work just to make it look nice in a few spots. Gotta make myself a pile of stuff to get chromed and get that taken care of and then its back together again.

18 Days

I started taking my bike apart on October 25th and took it for the first ride in the new frame on 11/11/11. 18 days. Got a small fender spacing issue but nothing that can't be fixed with a few turns of a nut. So far I love the bike this way. Way lighter and quicker and honestly not that much worse of a ride than the stock setup. Rode it to work this morning and was bummed I couldn't keep going. Here it is as it sits. Gonna ride it for the next week or two and get everything dialed in and then its back apart for a trip up the street to Fred for some paint.

Took it off the lift last night for the first time since I started. Forgot i need to add a fork stop so i made that last night and I'll weld it on tonight. Then I just have to cut off the kickstand lug that was welded on the frame when I got it and it's time to start wiring. I won't have my battery until next week so that sucks but I think it'll take a day or two to get the ignition and wiring straightened out. If anybody's installed a Dyna S ignition before leave me a comment on here because I may have a few quick questions for you. I don't know why they don't give you a fucking wiring diagram with these things but I'm sure it won't be too hard to figure out.

I've been at the garage every day for the last 9 days working on my bike. I haven't been this excited about finishing a project in a LONG time. Took a few photos the other night but they aren't up to date with the progress. I've done almost all of the fab work with the exception of mounting the expensive ass tiny battery I ordered yesterday and making a mount for my highway bars. The oil tank is mounted and plumbed, and I welded the kickstand on last night. I ended up just cutting it off of the stock frame and welding it to the new one. All I really have left to do to finish the mockup is put oil in it, install the taillight, wire it, and install the ignition system. Here's a few pics of it as of Monday night:

Got home from Todd's wedding in New Orleans about 2:30AM on Monday and started working on my bike yesterday. Made some pretty decent progress last night and thanks to Hunter and Rob I was able to get the motor in the new frame last night and even got the rear wheel set up. Tonight I'll do the front end and it'll be a roller. Might do the rear brake stay tonight so I can be done with all the wheel/brake stuff. Had to get a bunch of new motor mount bolts last night because they're all too long when you change frames. I still need a chromed octagon or skinny horseshoe oil tank and I'm probably gonna go with an electronic ignition to get rid of a bunch of the stock wiring. I also have to figure out how to wire the electric start because I've never wired a bike from the ground up with e-start before. Anyway, its coming along. Should be spending lots of time at the garage over the next few weeks.

Busted two pieces of shit trying to steal my girls bike last night from in front of the house. The dog woke me up barking so I went to check it out and saw a guy trying to push her bike down the street but the steering lock was on. He had already broken the handguard that a chain was locked to but he couldn't push it in a straight line so he left to get a truck and a friend. When they came back in their Dodge Durango I rolled outside with an AK47 and cocked it so they could hear and started yelling for them to get on the ground. One ran and the other hid behind the Durango so I walked over with the gun on him and he eventually ran too. Cops came and I know nothing will happen to them but it felt good scaring the shit out of them. They ended up leaving their car and their boy came and got it. I made sure he knew who I was and I know who he is and where he lives and made it clear we don't want anymore problems. Just a word to the wise, don't be lazy and not lock your shit up if its in plain sight and if you have a dog treat her nice because she may save you a lot of headaches one day.

Out to White Stone, VA for work on Friday. Awesome ride out 33 over a couple of cool bridges and through some neat little towns. Rode the Shenandoah 500 on Saturday with no major foul ups except a roadside clutch bleeding and a few missed turns. The shitty weather chased us out late saturday night and I ended up going to a Britsh show and swap in Manassas with my girl on Sunday. Pretty good weekend all in all.

Brooklyn weekend

Andrew, Rob and I rode up for the Invitational this weekend. I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked but I think the time spent hanging out was better than having a bunch of the same photos that everyone else took anyway.

We found out that you can't camp on rooftops in NYC. Got woken up Friday morning to 8 cops standing outside the tent, so if you were thinking about stepping up your urban camping game you better make sure nobody is trying to let their dogs play on the roof. Fuck the police.

I Had an awesome time hanging out with everyone at the DS BBQ. It's funny that I found myself hanging mostly with people that live pretty close to me when we all drove like 6 hours to go this thing. Of course its always awesome to see Brian and he's got a little get together in the works for October so if you're feeling like making a trek to Richmond we're going to have a little something at the garage.

Been thinking about making my bike rigid for a few months now and finally said fuck it and bought a frame last night. I had been going back and forth in my head because I love my bike the way it is but I get super jealous when I see other dudes that have made the switch to rigid. Been thinking about saving and getting a shovel for the last few months too. Anyway, after much debate I found a good deal on a brand new Paughco frame that somebody had bought and not ever done anything with. Paypal'd the dude some money and he sent me a tracking number and the frame is one its way to me from Arizona. I'm stoked. Already ordered the neck bearings, axle adjusters and axle kit from Paugcho so I'm set on that stuff. Now I need to find an oil tank and figure out what to do about a battery box. I'd like to try and rework the stock one if i can. I've got a while to think about it because I don't plan on tearing my bike down until late October or November but when I start I want to have everything on hand ready to go and I'd like to try to have it ready for paint within about 3 weeks.

1100 miles in the California Republic

I haven't really spent any time out west, and like a lot of east coasters I tend to picture "the west" as the holy land for riding.

I was right.

While out in LA for work I decided to pick up a rental bike from Eagle Rider, which is such a similar experience to the dealership its amazing they arent connected. Corporate culture theft at its best. 65 billion dollars later I had an 08 883 at my disposal for 6 days. LA did absolutely nothing for me so within minutes of swiping by credit card and cleaning out my bank account I was headed north. The pictures speak for themselves, but the trip is summarized as follows: Ocean sunsets on unreal coastline, wishing I could surf, the awesome smells of California fruit crops, elk, eagle, deer, and coyote sightings, nearly hitting a fucking bear while lost in the desert at night while running out of gas, mountain scenery that rivals anything Europe has to offer, riding through a forest fire, not talking to anyone for days, sleeping by waterfalls, living off just oatmeal, bathing in only mountain streams, waking with the sun, developing bear paranoia, desert heat so hot it melts the soles of your shoes, and finally ending up on the airplane and hoping the smell of campfire smoke is somewhat hiding my real smell.

This trip has taught me an invaluable lesson: by way of bike is the ONLY real way to travel. Anything else just isn't a real experience.

Took me long enough. As i roll out off my storage unit i pull in the clutch to find that its somehow out of adjustment. no problem, this will just take a second.... before i could even get the derby cover off, out of nowhere, it starts pouring. shit luck. it still hasn't stopped. guess the hurricane is moving in a little early. anyway, ill be on the road with this bad bitch in no time. untill then, time to batten down the hatches and ride out the storm.

Took a trip out to Jacksonville today to get tattooed by Mike Wilson of Inksmith Rogers tattoo. Needless to say, he knocked it out of the park with this one. Rolled up to the EE yesterday to help Andrew change a tire for his shovel project that he's moving along on. Once we got the tire on, while he was working on his front end and his sissy bar I decided I'd try to mock up my dual headlight setup that I traded Mike and Hunter for over the last few weeks. I used some 1-1/4" clevis hangers for a temporary mount and ordered some sturdier P clamps this morning. I liked it so much that I decided to leave it on for a while.

Turns out it belonged to a friend of hers that was in a club and he's been back and forth across this country several times while wearing it. Been a rough week for my vehicles. Bike got knocked over Sunday night in front of the house. Whoever did it picked it back up for me so that was nice of them, but not nice enough to leave a note. Then Friday morning I went out to get in the van since the bike was in the shop and that had been run into while parked in front of the house, too. Neither one is real bad but nothing sucks more than dealing with insurance companies. Also while I was riding back from a jobsite today my fucking plate that holds my footpeg and master cylinder on broke off because when the bike got knocked over it must have cracked and I didnt notice it.

Yesterday a friend of ours truck got stolen and the cops found it about 10 hours later in an alley in one of the shittiest neighborhoods in Richmond. We went over to drive his roommate's truck home and I ended up on the back of Andrew's bike. Very weird night but stoked that Greg got his truck back unharmed.

I love when I'm looking at a bike thinking, damn this thing's pretty cool and then I bend down and look closer and I see some shit like this that must have taken so much work. From the seat mount, to the tail light, to the cut up primary cover. What a cool bike. Falcon builds some crazy shit.

Just what I need, more junk that I have no immediate need for but is too cool to not get. Picked this stuff up on Sunday on a little trip up to Fredericksburg with the lady. Might be interested in trading something for a dual headlight setup or something else that's cool if you've got your eye on anything but no cash sales.

We ended up going over to a friend of Angie's stepdad's house and looking at his stuff and he's got a bunch (10 or so?) old Indian motorcycles from the 40's that he's restored that he's selling, along with a ton of other parts and his Paughco framed, STD Panhead powered "old man pan" with electric start. I wanted to take photos but I felt weird trying to talk to him about shit and not seem like some kind of wack tourist taking photos like I was in disneyworld. Old guys like that are so fucking cool to me.

Ever since a few years ago when Lil' Tard decided to run me off the road on my enduro bike on his way to see Young Jeezy in Shockoe Bottom, I've been a little wary about wearing a helmet with no face shield. In that accident I hit the front brake hard trying to slow down because he was turning right from the left hand lane as I was passing him and my chin bar on my full face helmet did this to his roof:

If that had been my chin I'd probably look pretty fucked up but I was fine. Anyway, I found a cheap little Bell Moto4 helmet a few months back and have had plans to reline it since it's a kids helmet and I finally got around to it. I even kept the original liner that was in it and swapped out the padding for some yoga mat material that fits me way better. I was a little worried the visor would make it annoying on the highway but it did fine at about 70mph on the way to work this morning so I'd say I'm pretty happy with it. It's also nice not having AC condensate spraying into my mouth on the highway.
